Nokia to Power Medusa Subsea Cable Connecting North Africa to Europe – Boosting 5G, AI and Cloud Connectivity

Nokia has been chosen to provide the Medusa Submarine Cable System, a new subsea fibre optic network built by AFR-IX Telecom. Covering the Atlantic coast, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, this next generation infrastructure will  create a high capacity digital corridor between North Africa and Europe.

The Medusa cable will connect key North African states such as Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Egypt to Europe with open access, high capacity fiber links, vastly reducing the region’s digital divide and will enable 5G, cloud and AI technologies by offering faster, more reliable and more scalable connectivity across continents.

Nokia’s 1830 Global Express (GX) platform and ICE7 coherent optics are at the core of the system, enabling the transmission of tens of terabits per second per fiber pair with low latency, optimal power efficiency and cost effective scalability, providing telecommunications providers with outstanding performance.

Miguel Angel Acero, CTO and Founder of Medusa said that this collaboration is “establishing the foundation for a more connected and inclusive digital future,” noting reduced costs and faster connectivity for customers.

John Harrington, Senior Vice President of Nokia, commented, “Medusa allows for stronger integration with the global digital economy around the world connecting continents and enabling an AI powered society.”

As deployment takes place, the Medusa cable system is enhancing economic development, collaboration across borders and transition of the digital infrastructure in the Mediterranean.

This initiative is a significant step towards establishing North Africa as a commuting area as well as enabling business innovation and connectivity across the two continents.
