MediaTek, a renowned manufacturer of smartphone chips, is expanding its presence in the automotive industry with the help of a partnership with Nvidia.
The announcement was made at the Computex 2023 trade show, where MediaTek introduced its Dimensity Auto platform, designed to bring its smartphone technology expertise to cars.
MediaTek’s success in the mobile industry, powering devices like OnePlus Nord N300 and Asus ROG Phone 6D, has fueled its belief that it can replicate that success in automobiles.
Leveraging its experience in developing chips for smartphones and smart home devices, MediaTek aims to integrate its technologies into vehicles.
The Dimensity Auto platform will enable 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and satellite connections in cars, drawing on MediaTek’s expertise in these areas from its work on smartphones.
Plus, the Dimensity Auto Cockpit system will incorporate MediaTek’s advancements in televisions, phone displays, and image signal processors (ISP) used in phone cameras.
Nvidia, already deeply involved in the automotive industry with its GPU and AI technologies, will collaborate with MediaTek on the Dimensity Auto project. Nvidia’s Drive OS software will be utilized in the in-car infotainment systems.
The focus will be on the Dimensity Auto Drive system and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), enhancing user experiences, safety, and connectivity.
The partnership between MediaTek and Nvidia aims to create a comprehensive solution for the automotive industry, offering intelligent, always-connected vehicles.
Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO and founder, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing that the combination of MediaTek’s system-on-chip and Nvidia’s GPU and AI software technologies will enable innovative connected services across various vehicle segments.
While specific details about car manufacturers and launch dates have not been disclosed, production of the chips is expected to commence in 2026, with hardware ready for 2027 model-year cars. The global solution will involve collaboration with manufacturers worldwide.
MediaTek faces competition from Qualcomm, which holds a significant market share in the automotive sector with its Qualcomm Automotive solution.
However, MediaTek and Nvidia’s partnership positions them to provide compelling infotainment systems and advance the future of connected vehicles.
