President Kais Saied to Appoint PM in Tunisia

Tunisian President Kais Saied announced during a speech that new head of government will be appointed in Tunisia.

Tunisian President Kais Saied announced during a speech that new head of government will be appointed in Tunisia, where the exceptional measures decreed on July 25 will be maintained.

As crowd of people chanted that they want dissolution of Parliament, President mentioned he pass a new electoral law without unveiling its contours and stated that the new government head will be appointed based on provisions of transition responding to the will of the people.

Earlier on July 25, Saied sacked the government, suspended parliament, removed lawmakers’ immunity and put himself in charge of the prosecution. And since then, he has renewed the measures for a second 30-day period and had not responded to calls for a roadmap for lifting them.

Saied further added that danger still hangs over the country, and he cannot leave it like a puppet in the hands of those who act in the shadows, and of corrupt people. He accused unidentified players of conspiring to cause chaos and confusion in Tunisia and said there is no question of going back now.

Although, it should be noted that for the longest times Saied’s actions have sidelined Tunisia’s long-governing Islamist party, which accuses him of a coup, and worried Islamist groups around the region. While many Tunisians welcome his moves, human rights groups and some others are concerned about the future of the only country to emerge from the turbulent Arab Spring uprisings with a new democratic system.
