Somalia: Farmajo wants to Hinder PM’s agreement with Candidates

At the last meeting between the Union of Candidates and the Prime Minister it was agreed to move forward and reconvene on Thursday. It was also agreed that the opposition would hold a demonstration on Saturday.

The prime minister has agreed to set up a commission to investigate the February 19 incident and work with the union to hold peaceful protests against the illegitimate government and outgoing President Farmajo.

Illegal President Farmajo immediately announced a meeting of the union of candidates and the government on the day of the protests, which shows that Farmajo is not ready to hold elections in the country and wants to stay in power. On the other hand, it undermines the agreement reached between the Prime Minister and the Union of Candidates.

A statement from Villa Somalia read: “The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, HE Mohamed AbdullahiFarmajo, is hosting a ceremony on 4 March 2021 to mark the culmination of efforts to hold elections between the Federal Government of Somalia, State Governments and the Banaadir region administration.”

This is a big blow to the preliminary agreements that have been reached and shows us that Farmajo does not want elections in this country, he wants to oppose any plan to move forward to hold elections.

A statement from the candidates’ union accused Farmajo of violating the agreement reached with the prime minister and said he did not want to go ahead. Farmajo continues to destroy law and order and put the country in a political turmoil. The union said in a statement:

“It is unfortunate that the outgoing president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, is deliberately disrupting talks between the prime minister and the union.”

“On the same day as the scheduled protest, he announced an unconstitutional meeting to disrupt the talks between the Prime Minister and the Union of Candidates,” a statement from the candidates’ union said.

The Council of Candidates said in a loud voice that there would be dire consequences if Farmajo failed to negotiate and reach preliminary agreements. Farmajo, meanwhile, fears public protests on Saturday as he has lost public confidence. The only way out is to thwart any agreement reached in order to stay in power, and that is what the somali people are tired of and will not do.
