Smithville First Baptist Church was filled with the rich flavour of African culture as the Sozo Children’s Choir from Uganda took the stage on April 7. The choir, on a tour stop in DeKalb County, showcased part of their lifestyle while sharing about their mission.
Ministry Outreach Leader Miguel Zayas explained that the choir’s performance aimed to expose people to African sounds, colours, and dance while incorporating worship songs. The children’s joyous voices and vibrant enthusiasm ignited a worship experience that had the audience on fire for both the music and the ministry.
Sozo Children exists to empower vulnerable children in Uganda to become thriving leaders for Jesus Christ. Zayas highlighted the organisation’s mission to rescue children from situations of rape, abuse, or neglect and provide them with a safe and nurturing environment to grow and thrive.
Every two years, Sozo Children brings a group of children from Uganda to tour the United States, giving them a chance to share their stories and experience new cultures. For many of these children, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel outside their village and country.
During their time in the U.S., the children not only perform but also get to experience new foods, people, and places. Alex and Ssanyu, two members of the choir, shared their excitement about American food and the warm welcome they’ve received from people.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team in Uganda ensures that the choir members are well-prepared for their performances. With professional training in singing, dancing, and choreography, the children spend months honing their skills before embarking on their tour.
Looking ahead, Sozo Children continues to empower vulnerable children in Uganda and beyond, offering them hope, opportunities, and a brighter future. Their mission and ministry aim to make a lasting impact on the lives of children and communities in need.
