Delta State Government Implements Ban on Nollywood Actors’ Water Journeys

The Delta State Government in Nigeria has recently imposed a ban on Nollywood actors‘ water journeys unless proper safety measures, such as life jackets and other precautions, are in place. This decision comes in response to a tragic boat mishap on the River Niger, which claimed lives and prompted concerns over the safety of water travels for actors.

In a condolence message dated April 11, 2024, Dr. Nnamdi Ijeh, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, expressed sympathies on behalf of the state government and the creative community in Delta State to the families affected by the unfortunate incident on April 10, 2024.

The commissioner acknowledged the loss of lives among those who were expressing their creative talents during a movie shoot and emphasized the importance of safety precautions. He stated, “It is with a heavy heart that I want you to know that we share in your pain. At the time the news reached us, we visited the scene and discovered that the few individuals who were saved from the boat mishap were wearing life jackets. Therefore, it is essential, during this time of grief, to declare that such journeys should not be undertaken without life jackets, expert divers, and other safety precautions.”

Dr. Ijeh further highlighted the Delta State government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens. He warned against embarking on water journeys without the necessary safety equipment, particularly within the entertainment industry.

The letter, which was also copied to the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, conveyed prayers for the repose of the departed souls.

This ban on water journeys without proper safety measures is expected to have a significant impact on the Nigerian film industry, commonly known as Nollywood. As actors often travel by water to various shooting locations, the implementation of stricter safety regulations may require adjustments in production planning and logistics. However, the primary objective of the Delta State Government is to prevent further accidents and protect the lives of those involved in the film industry.

As the Nigerian film industry continues to thrive and gain global recognition, ensuring the safety of its participants becomes crucial. The Delta State Government’s ban serves as a reminder to prioritize safety measures while undertaking creative endeavors on waterways. By enforcing the use of life jackets, expert divers, and other necessary precautions, the government aims to safeguard the lives of Nollywood actors and others engaged in water-based activities.

Moving forward, it is expected that the Nigerian film industry will adapt by implementing stricter safety protocols to comply with the Delta State Government’s regulations. This proactive approach to safety will not only protect the lives of individuals but also contribute to the sustainable growth and development of Nollywood as a whole.
