Advanced technologies are having a greater impact on Nigerians. With continuous ongoing technological advancements, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will deploy a 5G network in Nigeria.
Recently, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the NCC, Umar Garba Danbatta, urged industry stakeholders to stand with the commission to explore the potential of the new technology. He further said, “Industry collaboration is essential to a successful deployment of 5G services in Nigeria.”
Reportedly, the policy framework for the 5G deployment in the country has come into place and the NCC will facilitate the deployment of services by the winners of the 3.5GHz spectrum auction, MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd and MAFAB Communications Ltd. The NCC has also set out the regulatory instruments for the fast deployment of the 5G services.
Nigerians continue to experience poor telecommunication services. More than 35 million people lack access to telecommunications services in Nigeria despite growing investment in the sector because of the inadequacy of the wireless and fibre optic connectivity infrastructure. It is also important to note that only 68.7 per cent of the population owns a PC in Nigeria, which means the country has a long way to go in terms of technological advancement. Hence, 5G deployment is necessary to transform Nigeria.
Lack of access prevents citizens from accessing digital and financial services in the country. To fix this problem, the NCC has committed to increasing investment in fixed and wireless infrastructure across Nigeria. NCC will work with stakeholders for technological advancement in Nigeria.
According to media reports, several measures have been implemented under the Nigerian National Broadband Plan 2020 – 2025. Under this plan, the authorities will look after the licensing of infrastructure companies, spectrum refarming; auctioning of 5G spectrum, replanning of the 800 MHz CDMA spectrum for LTE, and the administrative allocation of the 700 MHz spectrum for LTE.
