The ruling party in Nigeria appoints a candidate for the presidential election in 2023

On Tuesday, more than 2,300 delegates from Nigeria’s ruling party are gathering in Abuja for the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) primaries to nominate its candidate for the presidential election in 2023. These primaries are being held as part of the party’s nomination process. As required by the constitution, elections will be held in the country with the largest number of citizens on the African continent on February 25, 2023. This will happen at the same time that President Muhammadu Buhari leaves office at the end of his second term.

At Eagle Square, which served as the location for the primary election. An AFP reporter noticed that hundreds of activists dressed in the party’s colors—green, white, and red—were congregating along the avenues and waving flags as they waited for the delegates to arrive. These activists were wearing the party’s official logo. Twenty-three different people are running in this primary to be the APC’s candidate in the upcoming election.

The problem of safety will be of the utmost importance during the primaries in a nation that has been struggling against the aggression of criminals and Jihadists. Bola Tinubu, the party’s historic leader; Yemi Osinbajo, the current vice president; Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transport; and Ahmad Lawan, the president of the Senate, are all leading contenders for the All Progressives Congress.

On the night of the party’s primaries, Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria, had not publicly endorsed any of the candidates running for the party’s presidential nomination. Instead, he has asked that “delegates be free to select,” according to a statement released by his spokesman. Atiku Abubakar, a wealthy businessman from the north who is running for president for the sixth time in three decades, was chosen as the candidate for the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), last week. Abubakar is a former vice president of Nigeria and is currently running for the presidency for the sixth time in his lifetime.

Mr. Abubakar and the candidate of the APC will face competition from other candidates in the race for the presidency of a country that is beset by pervasive insecurity due to the jihadist insurgency in the north-eastern region.
