Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reviews and fixes the salary of a Member of Parliament in Kenya.
Article 230 (4) (a) of the Constitution of Kenya empowers the SRC to review and fix the remuneration and benefits of members at national and county levels of government.
Regular reviews of the salaries of civil servants, including Members of Parliament, are carried out by the SRC. The current pay and benefits for Members of Parliament are based on the third pay and benefits review cycle, which covers the financial years 2021/2022 to 2024/2025.
The salary of a Member of Parliament in Kenya
In Kenya, the salary of a Member of Parliament is determined by whether or not he or she is:
- Leader of the majority party
- Leader of the minority party
- a regular Member of Parliament (National Assembly/Senate)
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission has apparently ‘frozen’ the pay increases for state employees that were due to come into effect in the 2024/2025 financial year. That means that salaries for the 2023/2024 financial year will remain in force.
The financial year 2023/2024 runs from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, while the financial year 2024/2025 runs from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025.
The Majority Party Leader’s and Minority Party Leader’s salary for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 financial years is a gross monthly salary of KES 784,768. This is made up of a basic salary of KES 470,861, additional allowances in the form of a housing allowance of KES 150,000, an official travel allowance and a salary market adjustment of KES 163,907.
