UAE’s 6G Leap – Powering Tomorrow’s Innovation

The United Arab Emirates has made a groundbreaking advancement in changing the future of global connectivity with the first successful 6G trial in the Middle East. The trial is the first time THz (Terahertz) technology has been attempted in the region, which is a huge step toward ultra-fast, intelligent networks that can change industries, economies, and human experiences.

The trial was completed by e& UAE in collaboration with New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), achieving a remarkable throughput of 145 Gbps. This was a record throughput speed and establishes the UAE as a leader in digital transformation and wireless innovation for the region, setting a timeline for future connectivity.

The Science Behind the Speed: The Distinction of 6G

6G employs a new paradigm that focuses on hyper-connectivity and AI-native intelligent elasticity, and unlike 5G, which was built on advanced mobile broadband and IoT. Specifically, the UAE’s pilot 6G system tested ultra-high capacity with ultra-low latency using Terahertz (THz) frequencies.

The network combined AI-native networking, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), and integrated sensing and communication to create an intelligent mesh self-optimising network. This was enabled by these capabilities, and the network can support advanced applications such as holographic telepresence, extended reality (XR), digital twins, and real-time precision autonomous vehicle coordination, changing the way humans and machines interact.
