“We chose Raila Odinga,” Kenyatta says of the 2022 presidential election

Kenyatta reiterated his support for his former rival before a cheering crowd in Nairobi, only weeks after their parties joined forces ahead of the August elections. On Saturday, if there was any doubt that Kenyatta and Odinga had buried the hatchet, it was provided. President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya has endorsed his erstwhile competitor for the country’s top position. He told a jubilant audience in Nairobi, “We have selected Raila Odinga.”

The move comes just two weeks after their parties merged ahead of August’s presidential and parliamentary elections. Mr. Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party and Odigan’s Orange Democratic Movement banded together under the name Azimio la Umoja, which means “Quest for Unity.” This official support brings together two of Kenya’s most powerful political families, who have frequently clashed at the polls. After scores of people were killed in post-election violence in 2017, Kenyatta and Odinga astonished the country when they shook hands and declared a truce in 2018.

Odinga’s presidential run for 2022 comes after four failed presidential bids in 1997, 2007, 2013, and 2017. The declaration came after Kenyatta’s chosen successor, William Ruto, was fired from the Jubilee Party. Ruto is also running for president.
