WhatsApp To Stop Working For Some Africans, After October 24

WhatsApp is set to stop working on certain older smartphones starting October 24, 2023. The messaging app will discontinue its support for smartphones running Android 4.1 or earlier versions and iPhones still using iOS 11 or lower.

After October 24, WhatsApp will only be compatible if you have Android devices running OS version 5.0 and above. If you’re an iPhone user, you would require iOS 12 or newer and KaiOS 2.5.0 and higher.

WhatsApp will notify you directly within the app before ending support for their operating systems, providing multiple reminders to upgrade their devices.

While the specific list of affected phones in South Africa was not provided, it is anticipated that older Android phones from manufacturers like Sony, HTC, LG, Motorola, and others may be impacted.

iPhones currently running iOS 11 will need to update to at least iOS 12 to continue using WhatsApp.

To check your Android phone’s operating system version, navigate to

  • “Phone Settings” > “About phone” > “Software information.”

If your Android device is running Android 4.0 or lower, WhatsApp will no longer be supported after October.

For iOS devices, you can find your iOS version by going to the

  • “General Settings” and selecting “About.”

It’s recommended to update your device if it falls under the unsupported category to continue using WhatsApp.

As you know, WhatsApp regularly updates its app with new features. But the platform also discontinues support for older devices to ensure optimal performance and security.

Users of supported devices should keep their operating systems up to date to avoid interruptions in WhatsApp service.

I know this news might be tough to swallow, but WhatsApp is going to stop working on some older smartphones after October 24, 2023.

This means that if you’re still using a phone running Android 4.1 or earlier, or iOS 11 or lower, you’ll need to upgrade your device to continue using WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in Africa. It is the most popular messaging app in 41 African countries. The app is used by millions of people every day to stay connected with friends, family, and businesses.

But I also know that not everyone can afford to buy a new phone. It would be worth considering only if WhatsApp chatting is very important for you.

If you can’t afford to buy a new phone right away, there are a few things you can do.

  • You may try to find a cheap used phone that meets the minimum requirements for WhatsApp.
  • You can try to exchange your old phone for a newer model.
  • Or, you can try to contact your phone company to see if they offer any discounts on new phones.
