On July 10, 2023, a significant global outage affected several popular social media apps owned by Meta, the parent company of Facebook.
The outage lasted for approximately six hours, starting at around 10:45 AM PST and lasting until 4:45 PM PST. The affected services included Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, impacting users worldwide.
The outage was attributed to a technical issue with Meta’s Domain Name System (DNS). DNS is a crucial component of the internet infrastructure that helps computers locate and connect to websites.
When Meta’s DNS servers experienced problems, users were unable to access the aforementioned social media platforms and messaging app.
During the peak of the outage, thousands of users encountered difficulties. Downdetector.com, a platform that monitors such issues, reported more than 14,000 Instagram users, around 7,000 Facebook users, and approximately 2,700 WhatsApp users facing access problems.
Additionally, Meta’s latest social media platform, Threads, was also impacted, with approximately 470 users experiencing issues.
The outage drew attention not only due to its global reach but also because of its duration and impact on users. The services being unavailable for six hours disrupted social interactions, communication, and access to content for millions of individuals.
Meta promptly addressed the situation and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the outage. They acknowledged the technical issue with their DNS servers and assured users that they were actively working to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
