White South Africans Rally in Support of Trump Over Racism Claims

The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria witnessed hundreds of white South Africans demonstrating their support for former president Donald Trump together with his assertions about racial mistreatment. The protesters mainly belonging to the Afrikaner community carried signs that supported Trump while expressing their disapproval of South African discriminatory laws. The rally happened after Trump issued an executive action to reduce United States financial support for South Africa. The land expropriation law recently passed by the government has become his basis for accusing the legislation of discriminating against white landowners. South African authorities maintain the new law exists to fix historical land divisions by discrimination that does not endorse racist behavior.

Trump declared in his official directive that Afrikaners qualified as “racially disfavored landowners” and opened the opportunity for giving them refugee status in America. Under the current land expropriation law President Cyril Ramaphosa states the government has no plans for forced evictions and land seizures while waiting for the first alleged confiscation to take place. Critics of the law claim it belongs to a broader array of programs that they believe harm white South Africans. The implementation of Black Economic Empowerment policies from 1994 onward received condemnations from protestors who opposed its efforts to benefit black communities.
