Nigerian star Orji Okwonkwo beat former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney to win Major League Soccer (MLS) best goal of the week 17.
The 21-year-old Benin-born was the star of his Montreal Impact in the 2-1 victory against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, June 26 after scoring twice in the encounter with the second goal that earned him the prestigious title.
Okwonkwo scored the winner in the 66th minutes despite returning from a three-game absence caused by an injury where he struck the ball on the fly and was back to the net as his shot finished in the top right corner of the Timbers’ cage.
DC United striker Rooney also produced a goal that went around the football world after scoring the only goal of the clash against Orlando City SC when he had not even crossed the center line of the field.
Okwonkwo had missed the last three games for Montreal due to a leg injury he suffered against Los Angeles FC May 25th but the victory sees Impact remain second in the Eastern Conference with 30 points, two points behind the Philadelphia Union.
