The Union of Candidates rejected the message of the Presidents of Galmudug and HirShabelle at the request of President Farmajo to meet with the candidates. Farmajo has previously called for a meeting with the opposition leaders to escape diplomatic pressure from the international community and protests from the public against his illegal extension.
Sources close to the meeting at President Qoorqoor’s house say that AbdirahmanAbdishakur left, after Qoorqoor and Gudlawe came up with what they expected from them other than to become messengers, where they were originally waiting for them to take a clear position on the two-year extension and share their experiences with Farmajo at the conference on Monday.
However Farmajo is facing political pressure as the international community has once again forced him to meet with the union of candidates and rescind the illegal extension. I am also growing pressure from the Somali people who are openly opposed to the extension of the parliament. Protests and tensions are on the rise in Mogadishu as ousted commander Sadaq John has mobilized large numbers of troops amid fears of fighting in Mogadishu.
Farmajo, who appears to be in dire straits, is now facing opposition from the union of candidates. Meanwhile, the Union of Candidates called on Ali Gudlawe and Ahmed Qoor-Qoor to first clarify their position on the House of Representatives’ decision to vote on the Electoral Direction Act which would rule out the possibility of holding indirect elections as a result of the September 17th agreement. 2020.
The presidents of Galmudug and Hir-Shabelle states are expected to respond until Monday, April 19, 2021 if they oppose the plan from Villa Somalia which was approved by the parliament but lost much support. In addition, some regional administration leaders are expected to withdraw support.
