MDC vice president Tendai Biti has urged South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene in Zimbabwe’s crisis before it spirals out of control.
Biti made the call following a brutal crackdown on MDC supporters and passers-by by the police in central Harare on Wednesday.
Said Biti:
President Cyril Ramaphosa cannot allow impunity. He is the leader of sub-Saharan Africa by virtue of South Africa’s strong economy. Yes, we want Zimbabweans to fight a dictatorship but we are all brothers, there’s [needs to be] solidarity.
Police, armed with batons, sjamboks and water canons, charged at a handful of MDC supporters who were singing in the street close to the party’s headquarters in central Harare on Wednesday morning.
The crowd had gathered to listen to party President Nelson Chamisa give his Hope of the Nation address, which had been scheduled for the Africa Unity Square before the police banned the event.
