Senior officials of MDC have said that they do not want another military coup in Zimbabwe. Since the return of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga from China on Saturday morning, there has been speculation that the opposition is keen for him to lead another coup.
Presidential Advisory Council member, Trevor Ncube claimed the MDC is praying for another coup:
So G40 chaps are praying Vice -President Chiwenga carries out a hard coup against President Mnangagwa. MDC are praying for same. Certain ZANU-PF elements hoping for same. Civil war once set in motion is irreversible. We are messed up. We need Peace Makers! #ZimbabweFirst
But top MDC official, Fadzayi Mahere and David Coltart rejected the claims:
I can assure you that the #MDC is not praying for Chiwenga to carry out a coup against Mnangagwa. That will only perpetuate illegality & violence. Our prayer is for a return to respect for constitutionalism and the rule of law. Chiwenga & the military are incapable of doing that. – David Coltart
We don’t want another coup. We want political reforms and respect for constitutionalism. Open up freedoms. Depoliticize state institutions & the media. Align laws to the Constitution. Stop weaponizing food aid. End the violence. Don’t demonize opponents. The system must change. – Fadzayi Mahere
