Mozambique Elections 2024: Ruling Party Frelimo Claims Victory as Protests Rock Nation

As has been a tradition, the much-fought Mozambique presidential elections of 2024 saw the ruling party Frelimo clinch 70% of the votes. Election authorities said on Thursday that Frelimo’s candidate Daniel Chapo will be the successor of incumbent President Filipe Nyusi, who serves the maximum of two terms. Mozambique’s October 9 polls that involved presidential, parliamentary, and provincial vote have been followed by protests in the country after accusations of fraud were made.

Mozambique Elections Draw International Criticism as Violence Erupts

The European Union observers have raised concern on the credibility of the Mozambique presidential elections through citing major cases of vote tallying fraud. Mozambique elections saw Opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane of Podemos party gain 20% of the votes sending Renamo to the third position. The police have engaged protesters with tear gas and live bullets to disperse protests that are escalating across the country.

The violence following the political polls was claimed by the Renamo party when two key personalities of the Podemos party were killed in Maputo last week including the party’s lawyer Elvino Dias. Mondlane has urged the populace to embark on a two day stay away from work on Thursday and Friday in protest against the outcome of the polls. Mozambique’s opposition parties have till December to challenge the results of the presidential elections.
