Zambia Elections Become More Complicated: Why Opposition Leader Brian Mundubile Has Been Accused of Treason

Zambia opposition leaders Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu have been placed under police custody following an investigation into their treason offence amid the disputed presidential election.

According to the Zambia Police Service, the two opposition leaders had been arrested, interrogated, and statements of warning and caution have been documented. The police failed to provide information regarding the treason charges.

This follows days after the presidential elections of August 13, where Brian Mundubile lost to President Hakainde Hichilema and rejected the outcome, stating that the election had been rigged. Hakainde Hichilema had denied all claims.

Why Have Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu Been Detained?

According to the Zambia Police Service, Mundubile and Zulu had been arrested and interrogated over an offence of treason.

The police have yet to make public details regarding the alleged action committed by the two opposition politicians and how it is related to the disputed election.

“Warn and caution” statements were made during the questioning. This statement can become a part of the investigation and help decide whether there should be any criminal charges.

Mundubile’s attorneys are not currently available for comment.

The opposition leader has dismissed previous allegations made against him, claiming that they are fabricated.

What Are the Reasons for the Treason Allegation?

The exact reasons for this treason investigation remain unclear.

It has not been clarified by the authorities of Zambia whether the allegation is related to the actions of Mundubile in challenging the election results, his political activities, or other alleged behavior.

This distinction is vital because rejection or challenging of the election results cannot be regarded as proof of treason in itself.

Thus, the police investigation is still at the initial stage, and any allegation against Mundubile or Zulu would need to be proved through proper procedure.

Treason is one of the most serious crimes in Zambia.

Mundubile Has Already Been Summoned by the Police Before

This recent incident follows another summons that was issued to Mundubile based on national security concerns.

Previously, he was summoned for questioning last week when authorities started scrutinizing the opposition leaders due to the controversial election.

There have been other arrests of prominent opposition leaders, which have attracted the criticism of human rights organizations due to restrictions in political freedom and unfair treatment of the opposition.

Mundubile has stated that all charges against him are politically motivated and false.

Why Is The Election in Zambia So Controversial?

These arrests take place in the context of the controversial presidential election.

Hichilema is the winner of the election held on August 13, and Mundubile lost the election but disputed the result.

Mundubile has claimed there were violations of the election procedure and the result was not legitimate.

The problem has gone beyond voting at polling stations and now threatens the country’s security agencies and the judiciary.

What Is Going to Happen to Mundubile Now?

At this moment, it is unclear whether police will press charges against Mundubile and Zulu or let them off the hook once the investigation is completed.

The police have only confirmed that the two individuals had been interrogated and warned and cautioned, but they have not provided sufficient information regarding the essence of the offense.

Further criminal proceedings will depend on providing evidence of the allegations made.

Moreover, this case may affect political developments in Zambia as the country prepares for Hichilema’s swearing-in.
