Escalating Conflict: M23 Rebels Move Closer to Eastern Congo’s Key City of Bukavu

The M23 rebels of Eastern Congo assisted by Rwandan forces have pushed deep to the capture of Bukavu in the recent escalating conflict. In January, M23 captured frontline cities namely Goma adding tension to the region.

Moves by M23 raise fears of a larger scale war especially in light of the mineral rich territories they already control. The strategic  Bukavu fell with relative ease as it was occupied by Congolese troops to avoid street battles.

This violent upheaval has displaced thousands aggravating already tense humanitarian emergencies. The situation is rapidly spiraling out of control and threatening regional stability.
