Quartet Pushes Political Roadmap to Restore Peace and Stability in Sudan

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States came out with a common statement indicating that a political solution is badly needed to terminate the war that is still going on in Sudan. The Quartet pointed out that the crisis cannot be resolved by military means, and Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity should be preserved. The announcement gave a plan of action beginning with a three-month humanitarian truce and leading to the establishment of a government led by civilians within a period of nine months.

A Political Settlement as the Only Path Forward

The Quartet restated that Sudan’s problems cannot be addressed through arms. The inclusive politics process should instead be triggered in order to bring back peace and stability. In the joint statement, it was emphasized that unity and national institutions of Sudan were crucial to recovery and security in the long term.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt indicated its allusion to maintain the sovereignty of Sudan, and that restoring security would help displaced individuals go back to their homeland and resume normal existence, and safeguard state resources. Their mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia and the United States, via the Jeddah talks, and those of Egypt, in getting Sudanese civil and political groups to talk to each other, most recently in the Cairo-based forum in July 2024, have been hailed.

The proposal presented by the Quartet suggested a very clear roadmap in which the starting point was a three-month humanitarian truce to enable a quick provision of aid in all parts of Sudan. This would be the first move to an all-time ceasefire that would provide the grounds to have an inclusive and transparent transition process. The change, which will be accomplished in a nine-month period, will ensure the creation of a civilian government that will be representative of the Sudanese people in terms of peace, stability, and sovereignty.

Roadmap and International Support Mechanisms

The ministers made commitments to closely follow up on the proposed timeframe and to offer their good offices with regard to enforcing the proposed timeline. They also declared that they were ready to reconvene in case of necessity, holding accountability in the process.

It was also emphasized that working with the Arab League and the African Union would be required to make the transition of Sudan possible. The Quartet will further consult on the ministerial and sub-ministerial levels to create momentum. Another ministerial-level meeting is also scheduled on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York later this month, which is an indication of the good international support.

The common declaration solidified the global community with collective accountability to curb further increase, humanitarian access, and pave the way for a stable, sovereign, and civilian-based state in Sudan. Egypt reiterated that it was willing to contribute actively to every regional and international process that would help in ending the conflict and restoring the institutions of Sudan.

Meta Description

Quartet of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE and US demand a political resolution to the situation in Sudan, which includes a truce, followed by a civilian government within nine months.
