The digitalization in Africa is gaining momentum as more countries plan to introduce Africa 5G Network Expansion in the year 2026. While more than 30 African countries have already rolled out their commercial 5G services, many others are currently looking forward to offering better network services. Some of the African countries that plan to expand 5G in the coming year include Ghana, Mozambique, Côte d’Ivoire, and Morocco, by focusing on some of the major cities first.
Let us learn some of the latest developments in 5G expansion in Africa.
Ghana Expands its 5G Network Nationwide
Ghana has turned out to be one of the most prominent 5G countries in West Africa, having introduced a national government-sponsored wholesale network through NextGen Infraco. The commercial rollout is already being carried out in some of the important urban cities in Ghana.
The network is already operational in the following locations:
- Accra
- Kumasi
- Tamale
The government has ambitious plans to connect around 70% of the population by the beginning of 2027, providing high-speed internet access to millions more Ghanaians.
5G Network Rollout in Mozambique
The launch of the commercial 5G network in the country has started as three telecom companies were given spectrum licenses by the communications regulator in Mozambique.
At first, the network will be rolled out in:
- Maputo
- Commercial and economic centers
The launch of the network is seen as a crucial step to making Mozambique one of the major digital hubs in Southern Africa. The network launch will also improve enterprise connections and support emerging technologies.
Roll Out of 5G Network in Côte d’Ivoire
Commercial 5G services are being expanded in Côte d’Ivoire through three major telecommunications operators: Orange, MTN, and Moov Africa.
This network will include:
- Abidjan
- Business centers
- Urban centers that have more than 25,000 residents
There is a continuous increase in the service area of telecommunication companies owing to the increasing demand for fast mobile internet, cloud services, and e-commerce.
Expansion of Morocco’s Present 5G Network
The expansion of the current 5G network in Morocco can be attributed to the fact that the country’s operators started providing 5G services before 2026.
The present rollout of the 5G network in Morocco is taking place in:
- Casablanca
- Rabat
- Marrakech
There is an aim of achieving 70% coverage in 2030 in order to meet the requirements of streaming services, digital businesses, and smart cities. More investments from telecom operators are likely to increase the reach of 5G over the coming years.
Sub-Saharan Africa to See Rapid 5G Expansion
According to industry predictions, Sub-Saharan Africa is predicted to see some of the most rapid growth of 5G in the world within the next five years. The continuous modernization of telecom networks has led many operators to upgrade the use of their 2G and 3G spectrums to offer more 4G and 5G connections.
It is estimated that there might be almost 370 million 5G subscriptions in the region by 2031.
Africa 5G Network Expansion
The development of Africa’s 5G scene is rapidly advancing, with many African nations making considerable investments in next-generation technology.
Countries like Ghana, Mozambique, Côte d’Ivoire, and Morocco are some of the pioneers when it comes to this year’s rollout initiative for 5G technology, starting in major cities where there is more population and then expanding to other areas in the time to come.
