The partnership between the South African Post Office and Postbank has finally reached its end.
Starting May 1, 2026, there will be no more options to perform transactions involving cash at any SAPO branch.
Why Postbank has Discontinued Services at SAPO
While SAPO was providing banking facilities to customers of Postbank for many years, behind the scenes, Postbank had already taken steps towards transforming into a modern bank.
That said, discontinuing services at SAPO means this process has finally been completed.
One of the key milestones occurred in 2023, Postbank SAPO cash services stopped, when all cash transactions via Postbank were discontinued at post offices in favor of retail stores and ATMs.
This is a logical continuation of the above.
Where You Can Make Your Cash Withdrawals or Deposits
For our SAPO customers, these are the places where you should go from now on:
1. Standard Bank Branches & ATMs
Postbank account holders can transact with Standard Bank by making:
- Cash deposits
- Cash withdrawals
- Balance inquiries
Note that charges and limits apply at Standard Bank; therefore, be sure to inquire first.
2. Retailers (Cardless Withdrawals)
You could also use the cardless withdrawal service at participating retailers.
This is ideal if:
- You have no nearby bank branches
- You want daily cash availability
What If You Have a SASSA Grant Account?
In the case of receiving social security grants in the country, there won’t be any changes.
You’ll continue with:
- Grant disbursements in your bank account
- Cash withdrawals at retailers and ATMs
