Kenya is set for one of the biggest roll-outs of CCTV cameras in the coming months. The Interior Ministry has confirmed that the country is set to have the installation of Kenya CCTV Cameras in six major cities as part of efforts to increase security and help fight crime.
In which cities are the new CCTV cameras going to be installed?
The initiative will see the installation of CCTV cameras in the following cities:
- Nairobi
- Mombasa
- Kisumu
- Nakuru
- Nyeri
- Eldoret
The project will utilize standard and artificial intelligence-powered cameras in urban hotspots across the cities selected.
Cabinet Secretary for Interior Affairs, Kipchumba Murkomen, says that the purchase of the surveillance gadgets is almost at its final stage.
Nairobi Set for Massive Surveillance Boost
Nairobi is set for maximum deployment in the new initiative.
Plans have been laid by the government to deploy AI smart camera surveillance technology in over 125 major crossings in the capital. Apart from helping law enforcement officers in their duties, the cameras will contribute towards traffic control in the city.
CBD areas, main transport arteries, and other key public places are expected to be some of the priority areas.
Why Nairobi Needs More Surveillance
Increased cases of petty crimes and theft in certain sections of the city are some of the factors that led the government to undertake the new initiative. The new surveillance technology is intended to go hand-in-hand with the new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.
Other Cities
Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, and Eldoret cities should also prepare for enhanced surveillance coverage in commercial centers and transport arteries, among other strategic areas.
While no neighborhood map has yet been released by the authorities, it is clear that the main focus will be on:
- CBD areas
- Main highways
- Transport termini
- Government facilities
- Areas with high crimes rates
Also Coming to Police Stations
The use of surveillance technology is not just restricted to the streets anymore.
The government has revealed that over 1,200 CCTV cameras are planned to be installed in police stations in various parts of the country. According to officials, the objective behind this development is to enhance the efficiency of police stations by increasing transparency, accountability, and surveillance measures at these places.
Significance of Surveillance Expansion for Citizens
While the plan offers quick investigation of crimes and efficient emergency responses to citizens, it is likely to face scrutiny from privacy activists about how this data would be collected and utilized by authorities.
With the process of installation already underway in the six cities selected by the Kenya government, the average resident living in these places should see an increase in surveillance technology in their daily commuting areas and commercial regions.
Conclusion
The CCTV project in Kenya represents a paradigm shift in security measures being undertaken by the country. As part of the project, the following six cities – Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, and Eldoret – will be receiving increased surveillance capacity.
