Top African Passport Rankings, As per the latest report on the Henley Passport Index for mid-2026, the country of Seychelles continues to lead as the most powerful African passport holder, followed by Mauritius and South Africa.

Seychelles remains the number one African passport by providing visa-free entry to 154 destinations around the world.

The well-established diplomatic ties, good foreign relations, and long-term visa policies allow Seychellois citizens to get one of the highest travel freedoms among developing countries.

It is still considered to be one of the most important African passports for tourists and businessmen.

Mauritius and South Africa Stay on Top

Mauritius still takes the second position among African passports, allowing the country’s citizens to visit 147 countries visa-free.

The island country has maintained one of the continent’s best travel documents through its consistent diplomatic engagements and wide range of international agreements.

South Africa continues to be a top performer on the continent with access to about 100 to 103 countries. Though the country’s international passport ranking has been changing in the past few years, South Africa provides better access to international destinations than most of the countries in Africa.
