Egypt Deploys Emergency Measures Following 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake

Egypt has deployed emergency plans following a magnitude 5.5 Egypt earthquake that occurred in eastern Egypt early Monday, causing vibrations in various cities including Cairo, Suez, Ismailia, and Port Said.

The earthquake, which occurred around 3:00 a.m. local time, saw health authorities put hospitals on red alert, while emergency personnel assessed any form of damage. While there were no serious casualties following the earthquake, only minimal structural damage and one minor injury were recorded.

This earthquake in Egypt has caused Egypt to be vigilant in its emergency preparations as there is ongoing assessment for possible aftershocks.

Where Was the Earthquake?

According to reports from Egypt, the earthquake epicenter was located around 40 kilometers to the north of Suez, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Earthquakes were felt in many governorates, including Cairo, Suez, Ismailia, Port Said, and even El-Arish in North Sinai close to the border with Gaza.

Many of the residents ran outside because of waking up due to the earthquake, and some emergency services started conducting inspections of public structures and houses.

Damages Are Minor So Far

Despite the earthquake’s magnitude, there is no information about severe consequences for Egypt.

In Rod al-Farag, Cairo, three families had to leave their homes because of slight damage done to their residential building. There was no information about any serious damages to infrastructure and fatalities. The only one injured person was informed.

As for transportation services, they continued operating as usual because of no serious damage to roads and other objects.

Government Takes Immediate Action

Following the earthquake, Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered all hospitals in the earthquake’s area to go into maximum preparedness mode.

Intensive care departments in the hospitals went into maximum readiness, and rapid response ambulances were dispatched.

Egyptian Red Crescent also activated its regional emergency operations rooms.

It was stated that emergency services will keep collaborating with local authorities in maintaining public safety.

Safety Tips for Citizens

Authorities advised citizens to stay calm and follow official guidelines on safety.

The Egyptian Red Crescent told people not to enter any building that shows cracks.

Citizens were also advised by emergency services to trust only the information released by official sources and avoid posting any unofficial news on social media platforms, which may spread panic among citizens.

Though there have been no reported aftershocks, it is clear that the monitoring process is going on and emergency crews are ready to face any situation.

What Is Going to Take Place Next? – Egypt earthquake

Geological scientists and other emergency response teams will continue monitoring the earthquakes’ activity in the upcoming days, as engineers examine buildings that have been damaged due to severe earthquakes.

Despite the fact that Egypt is not one of the countries that experience frequent earthquakes, there are occasional cases when seismic activity happens in certain regions of Egypt due to its proximity to earthquake-prone areas of the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea.

It became evident that quick response to the problem helped reduce damage and demonstrate readiness of the country to deal with natural disasters.

The investigations are taking place; however, at the same time, the authorities are assuring citizens that everything is fine.
