At the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Morocco and Algeria will meet again and play for the bronze medal after their semi-final upsets. The teams will fight for the medal at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat after their unfortunate loss in the semi-finals, when the players sought to play better in order to finish among the top three in the championship.
As a result of good performances at the tournament, Morocco and Algeria have already qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

In their semi-final, Morocco did not manage to score a goal in the match against Cameroon, finishing their game without a goal after 120 minutes.
As hosts, Morocco had been aiming to make it to the final stage of the championship following the success that they recorded in their campaign. They now need to pull themselves together fast and be ready for the next tough challenge against a known team.
Algeria had their semi-final match as a much tougher game in which they lost 3-1 to Malawi, an upset maker in the competition that managed to book their place at the finals.

Morocco and Algeria are presented with a chance to fight another round of their regional rivalry in the bronze-medal match.
This is because these teams faced each other in the group matches, in which Morocco emerged victorious with a scoreline of 1-0 in favor of the hosts on July 30.
Morocco managed to get three important points after Sanaa Mssoudy netted the goal in the 84th minute.
For Morocco, therefore, the task is to convert home advantage to a podium finish after the heartbreak of being left out of the final.
Why a Bronze Medal Counts
Even though neither side will be able to vie for the WAFCON title, the game still holds great meaning.
