Nigeria Mosque Attack Raises New Questions

On August 21, 2026, in north-central Nigeria, gunmen raided the Kpenya mosque located in Niger State during Friday prayers and kidnapped several worshippers.

The abduction of worshippers occurred at the Kpenya Mosque situated in the village of Dekara in the local government area of Borgu, when gunmen surrounded the mosque and then kidnapped worshippers and fled into the surrounding forests. This attack has raised further questions concerning the deteriorating security situation in northern and central Nigeria.

Gunmen Kidnap Worshippers During Friday Prayer

According to the police and local officials, the attackers targeted the mosque around 2:00 p.m. local time when the worshippers were inside the mosque for Friday prayers.

According to security officers, there was no immediate death in the attack on the mosque, but scores of people were abducted. As much as the police have verified over 60 people kidnapped, residents argue that the number might be far higher since the kidnappers invaded other villages too.

Witnesses explained that gunmen came in huge numbers and took people, including worshippers, into the adjacent forest before fleeing.

The well-coordinated manner in which this attack happened has prompted concerns that armed gangs are getting audacious in attacking religious sites and villages.

Attacks on Nearby Villages Too

This is not the only case in which such attacks occur.

Residents said that armed gangs launched an attack on the neighboring villages of the Dekara region before moving to hide in forests.

This caused the displacement of several villages as families escaped from their homes out of fear of more attacks.

Local authorities said that many of the victims are still missing and the number of abductees needs to be verified by the authorities.

Difficult Conditions for Security Forces’ Rescue Operations

While Nigerian security organizations have sent joint security forces to the affected areas, rescue operations are quite challenging for them.

They say that poor road structures and a broken bridge connecting towns to the affected area have made it difficult for security organizations to rescue people.

The thick forest around the Borgu Local Government Area provides hiding and escape options for armed gangs.

Authorities have not stated whether any hostage has been rescued yet.

Why Niger State is Still Vulnerable

Niger State has emerged as one of the main security threats in Nigeria over the past few years.

There have been increasing activities by armed criminal gangs, popularly referred to as bandits, along with militants from other states in the region.

According to security experts, the dense forests and low number of security personnel have helped armed criminals to carry out attacks and abductions.

The recent attack on the mosque is just another part of the ongoing trend of kidnaps from schools, villages, highways, and religious centers in northern Nigeria.

Amnesty Demands Immediate Release of Victims of Attack

Rights organizations have criticized the attack and appealed to the Nigerian authorities to help free the hostages.

In a statement, Amnesty International Nigeria has demanded immediate steps be taken as civilians in rural areas continue to be subjected to attacks without proper protection.

The organization has also requested the government to improve security in such areas and ensure that no more such mass abductions occur in the future.
