2027 Nigerian Election

2027 Nigerian Election Campaign Season Starts for Tinubu

The launch of the election campaign season for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election begins this week. The president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is running for re-election, although the Nigerian president has come under attack due to his inability to solve problems of the economy, an increase in living costs, and insecurity in the country.

Voters are about to choose their next president in the January 2027 election, and the most important question of the upcoming campaign is whether Nigerians live better since 14 years of rule by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Opposition candidates include former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi. Both of them claim that the current ruling party failed to make people live better and provide safety.

Tinubu Defends Reforms Despite Public Frustration

During Tinubu’s presidency starting in 2023, the Nigerian government has implemented significant economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the financial situation in the country.

The government insists that the reforms have led to increased revenues, strengthened investor confidence, and helped restore its credibility as an economic manager.

Nonetheless, for many Nigerians, the positive effects of the reform have yet to materialize. High food prices, transportation fares, and inflation have put pressure on the people, resulting in dissatisfaction with the government.

According to SBM Intelligence analysts, almost 80 percent of Nigerians feel that Nigeria is moving in the wrong direction, with economic difficulties and insecurity being top concerns.

Cost of Living Crisis Dictates Voters’ Views

The economic conditions are likely to become a big theme of the campaign.

According to many Nigerians, their ability to afford basic goods has declined considerably in recent years. Small businesses, traders, and workers have found themselves burdened by high prices and low demand.

Butcher Abdullahi Sani at the Garki Market in Abuja shared with Reuters his observations about the worsening of the economic situation.

“Five years ago, I was selling six goats per day. These days, I am lucky to sell two, or even one.”

The views of ordinary Nigerians might become more important for the voters’ decision-making process than any other economic figures.

Nigeria’s Debt and Economic Challenges Are Also Important Issues

The opposition has further emphasized the increasing debt problem and falling standards of living in Nigeria.

Reuters reports that, according to government statistics, the debt level of the government increased from 12.6 trillion naira in 2015 to more than 159 trillion naira by March 2026. The government will spend a considerable amount of money on debt servicing.

Moreover, GDP per capita in Nigeria has decreased substantially in the last decade owing to the economic challenges being faced by citizens.

The opposition claims that these issues show that APC has failed to improve the economic situation after its almost 12-year rule.

Security Is Still an Issue in Nigeria

In addition to the economy, security is another important campaign issue.

Military interventions by the Tinubu administration have helped reduce the number of attacks in some regions and allowed more farmers to work on their fields. Nonetheless, insecurity prevails in many parts of the country.

Amnesty International notes that thousands of people have died because of the activities of armed groups since the Tinubu administration took office, and kidnapping and attacks continue frequently.

The menace of bandits in northwestern Nigeria, separatist sentiments in southeastern Nigeria, as well as criminal kidnappings in various states continue to test the capabilities of security operatives.

According to analysts, the candidates will be judged by how capable they will be to deliver safety and economic opportunities to the electorate.

Opposition Looks for Advantage from APC Fatigue

Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are trying to exploit the frustrations of the people with the ruling party.

They claim that there is a need for change in leadership in the country following ten years of APC-led governments. Yet, political experts believe that divisions among the opposition can play into Tinubu’s hands if the other contenders do not develop a unified strategy.

In the past, divided opposition campaigns in Nigerian elections usually favored the incumbents.
