Wicknell Chivayo and Wife Die in Helicopter Crash: Zimbabwe Mourns a Man Who Never Did Anything Quietly

Zimbabwe woke on Thursday to news that one of its loudest business personalities was gone. The Wicknell Chivayo and wife helicopter crash in Zimbabwe killed six people on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, and left the country trading shock, tributes and hard questions.

What We Know About the Crash

Police say the helicopter came down in the Marondera rural area, about 70 kilometres east of Harare, at around 5pm. There were no survivors. The government said the aircraft carried a prominent businessman, three other passengers and two pilots.

The family confirmed that Chivayo, 43, and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among the dead. State broadcaster ZBC reported that the group was flying from Gandami in Chikomba, where the couple were building a rural home. The helicopter crashed at Kudenga Farm about 40 minutes after take-off.

The cause is still unknown. A Civil Aviation Authority official said early findings show fuel spilled on impact before a fire burned the grass around the site. Investigators have not said more. President Emmerson Mnangagwa revealed that he had met Chivayo after a cabinet meeting just a day earlier, when the businessman shared his plans for the country.

Sir Wicknell: Flash, Fortune and Controversy

Few Zimbabweans needed an introduction to Chivayo. He called himself “Sir Wicknell“, a title he used often on social media even though he was never given a British knighthood. His taste for luxury, his public generosity and his closeness to the ruling ZANU-PF made him impossible to ignore.

His companies won major government energy deals, among them a contract worth more than $170 million for a solar plant in Gwanda. Supporters saw a self-made man who gave back. Critics saw a tenderpreneur whose rise leaned heavily on political connections. He also faced scrutiny over materials for the disputed 2023 elections. Zimbabwe’s anti-corruption commission closed that inquiry in 2025, saying it found no evidence linking him or the electoral commission to wrongdoing.

A Nation Waits for Answers

Social media has filled with tributes alongside rumours, and some early reports have conflicted on details such as the exact time of the crash. Authorities have promised to confirm the victims’ identities formally.

For now, families are grieving six lives lost. Whatever people thought of Chivayo, his death leaves a gap in Zimbabwe’s business and political scene. The country now waits for investigators to explain how a short flight home ended in tragedy.
