Zimbabwe Lake Kariba Ferry Disaster: 44 Dead

Zimbabwe Lake Kariba ferry disaster: Forty-four people have perished following a ferry capsize on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe after it was reportedly overloaded.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when the ferry capsized on the huge lake separating Zimbabwe from Zambia, causing a massive rescue effort and sparking debates regarding ferry passenger safety, ferry loading capacity, and emergency management.

The exact number of people on the ferry is unknown. The ferry is estimated to have a carrying capacity of 90 passengers, and at the same time there are reports of 153 people in it.

Passenger Warned About Danger, Claims Survivors

Survivors of the accident claim a chaotic scene developed soon after leaving the harbour.

Anyway Chambati, one of the few survivors in the crew, told Zimbabwe State media outlet that he saw 153 people in total, both passengers and crew, even children, before leaving the harbor.

Many passengers had reportedly told the captain to return as the waves grew worse.

It was reported by the survivors that the fears persisted for almost 30 minutes before the ferry overturned. It was said that the passengers had difficulty finding their life jackets as water started entering the ferry.

One of the survivors said that passengers had asked for help, but the captain did not make any effort to contact anyone for help.

The captain himself was one of the people who perished in the accident, as reported in Zimbabwe’s state-owned Herald newspaper.

Uncertainty Over the Number of Passengers

There has been confusion regarding the total number of passengers in the ferry involved in the accident.

As per Zimbabwe’s disaster management team, the ferry was carrying 114 passengers and five crew members, and 77 had been saved from the accident.

However, it was made clear that the total passenger numbers were based on the ticket-holding individuals only, as those children who had not bought the tickets might not be included.

Why the Tragedy Has Raised Questions Regarding Safety

The tragedy has raised safety issues for ferries operating on remote parts of Lake Kariba.

It was employed in the transportation of passengers originating from rural areas bordering the lake to Kariba Town. The survivors have stated that the ferry was experiencing problems even shortly after leaving, with their luggage and other belongings falling into the water.

Some issues need to be addressed regarding the number of passengers who exceeded the safety standards for this particular ferry.

An investigation will have to be carried out by the Zimbabwean authorities concerning the number of passengers, the condition of the ferry, and the weather.

Disaster Declared by Government

President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared this an incident of a state of disaster. This will allow the government to allocate more resources in terms of rescue efforts.

This will require efforts from the authorities at Lake Kariba. The reason behind it is that the windy conditions of Lake Kariba and its huge capacity make operations tough.

Lake Kariba ranks among the biggest African reservoirs. The creation of this man-made lake was a result of the building of the Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River during the late 1950s and the early 1960s. This lake is more than 200 kilometres long and in some places can reach a width of around 40 kilometres.

Since for the residents of the region ferries are an important means of transportation, this tragedy might affect not only the immediate loss of lives but can also make the local authorities conduct even stricter checks of passenger vessels that sail on this water reservoir.

At the moment, there are already 44 dead, and the number of missing persons is unknown; thus, the investigation of this tragedy should continue until the reasons for this tragedy are determined.
