Over the past few years, the Islamic Republic of Iran is suffering due to an economic crisis. The main problem for Iran is the high rate of inflation in the food sector this year. Protests have also taken place in recent months over the rate of inflation and the high cost of living. Inflation soared in the country in May-June as the government lifted import subsidies for essential goods. Several Iranians refuse to remain under the current government due to the economic crisis.
Earlier this year, hundreds of people protested water shortages in the central Iranian province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. They asked the government to help them. Earlier this year, protesters also hit the streets in southern Iran city to protest against the sudden price rise of essential food items that saw a massive 300 per cent jump. According to human rights activists, security forces attacked protesters with batons and tear gas and shot bullets in the air in several cities. As thousands of Iranians, already fed up with inflation and unemployment, took to the streets, the government crushed the protests with brutal crackdowns, killing, injuring and arresting hundreds of people.
Drought is also affecting Iran’s economy, which is already batted with Western sanctions over Iran’s nuclear deal. Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran had curbed its nuclear program in return for relief from the sanctions by the US, EU and United Nations. After the United States’ 2018 withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or nuclear accord, the economy of Iran remains affected. In 2018, the US also re-imposed sanctions on Iran. The economy of Iran remains strained by tough U.S. sanctions banning oil sales and access to the global financial market.
Iranians have also criticised regime security forces and clerics in recent years as they impose their reactionary lifestyle on others. They have also criticised Iran’s parliament for ignoring their problems.
Iranians said that Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, promised to create jobs, lift sanctions and rescue the economy, but he failed to keep those promises.
Currently, Iran has been gripped by protests and riots. The protest erupted in several cities and towns of Iran after the death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini. Many women burned their Hijabs and chopped off their hair on the street, demanding justice for Amini.
