Al Shabaab militants have taken control of Mahaday district

Reports from Mahaday district in Middle Shabelle region say that Al-Shabaab fighters have taken control of Mahaday district in Middle Shabelle region.

Reports from the town say that heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters have taken control of Mahaday district, where government and Hir-Shabelle regional administration forces were stationed.

Al-Shabaab fighters said in a statement that they had taken control of the district, and reports posted on al-Shabaab’s website said that all neighborhoods in Mahaday were under Al-Shabaab control, with government and Hir-Shabelle forces. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mahaday district, about 23km from Jowhar town, was one of the areas under the control of government and HirShabelle forces, and there was no word from government officials in Middle Shabelle region about the fighting against Al-Shabaab.

Recent reports from Mahaday indicate that government forces have been ousted from the town and are regrouping at an AMISOM base at the former weapons factory on the outskirts of Mahaday.

Fatalities and injuries were reported as a result of the fighting, although no exact figures were available.
