Benin Africa Tourism Awards: Four Nominations Put West Africa’s Cultural Gem in the Spotlight

Benin does not always get the headlines that bigger tourism names enjoy. This week, however, the Benin Africa Tourism Awards story is turning heads, with the country picking up four nominations at the 2026 ceremony.

Four Chances to Win

Benin has been shortlisted for Country Destination of the Year and Cultural Destination of the Year. Benin Tourism is also up for Tourism Board of the Year, while the campaign film “Explore Benin, A World of Wonders” is nominated for Tourism Video of the Year. It is a rare spread, covering the destination itself, the people marketing it and the story they tell.

Public voting stays open until October 29 and makes up 20 percent of the final score. The rest comes from judges and the Balearica Awards College. Winners are due to be announced in London on November 1.

Why Benin Deserves the Attention

Anyone who has followed Benin travel stories will understand the excitement. The country carries a deep sense of history, and the coastline near Ouidah, home to the “Door of No Return” slave trade route, draws visitors who want to understand the past. Benin is also widely known as the birthplace of Vodun, and its festivals, masks and rituals keep Benin cultural heritage alive. Recent Africanews coverage has featured the masks and rituals of Porto-Novo, the Gaani festival and the artisanal potters who are preserving their craft.

A Boost for the Wider African Tourism Industry

Recognition like this matters beyond one country. The African tourism industry is competing for travellers who want authenticity, and awards help smaller destinations get noticed alongside the famous ones. A win in London could mean more bookings, more jobs for guides and hoteliers, and more pride for artisans whose work often goes unseen.

If you are curious about the nominees, voting is simple and the deadline is close. Whether Benin takes home a trophy on November 1 or not, the shortlist is already a win for a country with plenty of stories left to tell.
