This was according to a statement by Security Minister Mahamadou Sana, as he announced on the country’s national television that Burkina Faso’s government had managed to thwart an entrenched plot against the stability of the country. According to him, the plan had been organised by people living in Côte d’Ivoire and other countries, with a series of subversive activities to undermine the current regime.
Authorities have charged 14 individuals, junta opponents, ex-ministers, and journalists with leading the conspiracy plot. The conspiracy was said to be divided into three phases, the first of which was a recent jihadi attack in central Burkina Faso last month that killed more than 100 people.
This second wave included strategic places like the presidential palace, a base for military drones, and an airport. According to him, in the third and final phase of the attacks, it will be near the border with Ivory Coast. The security minister added that “all phases of the plot were intercepted before they could be executed.”.
In addition to the Burkinabé civilians and servicemen living abroad, which were involved according to the government, economic operators and civil society leaders have taken part in those attempted acts of destabilization. It also emerged that several arrests were made in neighboring Niger, dismantling a significant portion of the plot.
