England-South Africa third test: Match to resume on Saturday

After the second day was postponed on Friday due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth, the third and final test between England and South Africa at The Oval will begin on Saturday.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that cricket would resume on Saturday in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and in recognition of her extraordinary life and service. Rain on Thursday wiped out the first day, and there won’t be an additional day added, so the series finale is now just a three-day test.

The ECB stated that Cricket South Africa has been in talks with us, but they must fly home on Tuesday to spend a few days there before travelling to India and Australia.

In accordance with instructions from the Official National Mourning, domestic and recreational cricket matches will also go ahead as scheduled this weekend, and an England women’s Twenty20 match against India will be played on Saturday.

Although the Football Association said that all games in England would be postponed, rugby will still be played this weekend. The national anthem will be played at The Oval after a moment of silence, according to the ECB. “All athletes and coaches will wear black armbands. Branded merchandise will be replaced with messaging honouring The Queen with cricket,” the ECB announced.

The series is tied at one game apiece, and England captain Ben Stokes tweeted: “She loved sport, be honoured to play in her memory.”

“We have been in discussions with Cricket South Africa but they have to fly home on Tuesday to spend a precious few days at home before heading to India and Australia. Tomorrow (Saturday) is therefore confirmed as Day 3 of a 5-day Test Match,” the England Cricket official Twitter handle read.
