Police and a spokesman from the area reported on Thursday that an attack by armed individuals in the Katsina province of northwestern Nigeria resulted in the deaths of 17 people, including five members of the police force. Locals know that bandits, who are criminals who attack, kill, and kidnap people in villages and steal livestock, hide in the forests in the northwest of the country.

On Wednesday evening, around three hundred bandits on bicycles launched an assault on a police station located in the Kankara area, which is close to the Gatakawa hamlet. According to Gambo Isah, who serves as the spokesperson for the local police department, they killed five cops. Isah reported that five police officers had been killed while attempting to stop bandits from carrying out an attack in the Gatakawa area. “They were fighting to prevent the bandits from carrying out an attack,” Isah stated.

In addition, according to a local figure, at least nine people were slain in additional attacks carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday in the village of Faskari, which seem to have been carried out by the same bandit cell. According to what Musa Ado said, “4 villages were attacked, and a total of 9 people were slain; 6 of the people who died were from the Ruwan Goduya community.”

The local authorities said the bandits took cattle and other important items, and they killed one person in each of the three villages that were assaulted. “Each of the villages that were attacked lost one person.” Bandits coming from the neighboring state of Zamfara, which is where their primary “base” is located, have been carrying out an increasing number of attacks in the state of Katsina.

If it is believed that the primary motivation of these gangs is the lure of profit, then the authorities in Nigeria fear that the gangs are building ties with jihadist groups. These jihadist groups have been destabilizing the nation in Africa with the largest population for the past 13 years as they lead an insurgency in the north-eastern part of the country.
