Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen missed a late penalty as Lille beat visiting Montpellier 2-1 in Ligue 1 encounter on Friday night at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The 20-year-old Nigeria international eyeing his tenth league goal of the season as he returns to Christophe Galtier starting lineup after he was rested alongside Jonathan Ikone and Captain Jose Fonte for the dead rubber Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge in mid-week.
Osimhen’s run led to Lille’s opening goal from the penalty spot in the 40th when Rulli rushed rashly off his line and clattered into the Nigeria striker but Jonathan Ikoné sent the away keeper the wrong way from the spot as France forward did not celebrate, having previously played for Montpellier on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.
Montpellier were back on level terms thanks to Andy Delort who scored with 16 minutes remaining in the game when midfielder Florent Mollet expertly headed on a cross from the right to the unmarked striker at the back post.
Bayern Munich on loan star Renato Sanches popped up in the 84th minute to fire past Rulli in Montpellier’s goal and put Lille in the lead for the second time in the match before Osimhen had the chance to make it 3-1 after Les Dogues were awarded a 90th minute penalty, but failed to find the back of the net.
Lille moved three points behind second-placed Marseille, which looks for a seventh straight win when it travels to Metz on Saturday.
