Senegalese President Macky Sall, who is also the African Union’s (AU) chairman, spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday to “seek a permanent peace” in Ukraine. In a statement made on February 24, the African Union urged Russia and “any other regional or international actor” to “immediately respect international law, Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and national sovereignty.”
He had pressed Russia and Ukraine for a rapid cease-fire and the start of a UN-assisted dialogue. On March 2, Senegal, a country with strong ties to the West, startled the international community by voting in support of a UN General Assembly resolution that “demands that Russia immediately cease its use of force against Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine has informed the United Nations that it will return the 250 peacekeepers it has stationed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The withdrawal will include the whole military contingent from the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including people, helicopters, and equipment (Monusco).
Ukrainian soldiers are in several UN peacekeeping missions all over the world, the United Nations says. There are 16 soldiers in South Sudan, 12 in Mali, five soldiers from Ukraine in Cyprus, four soldiers from Ukraine in Sudan’s Abei, and three soldiers from Ukraine in Kosovo, the UN says.
