Relations between Nigeria and South Africa are deteriorating due to civil unrest that has broken out over the alleged crowning of a traditional Igbo king in the Eastern Cape.
In response to the incident, the Nigerian diplomatic mission has warned Nigeria South Africa Igbo king dispute its citizens to be wary after protests erupted in the city of East London, which is also referred to as KuGompo.
Memorandum to Nigerian Embassy
An alliance of civic organizations, such as Progressive Forces – United for Change, delivered a memorandum to the Nigerian Embassy to clarify the contentious matter.
The coalition stated that the matter was of national significance and was related to issues of sovereignty, government structures, and adherence to local laws.
As reported in the memo, conflicting reports concerning the event have confused affected communities.
Issues Regarding Traditional Leadership Systems
Right at the core of this conflict lies the allegation of having put in place a parallel system of leadership. Civil society organisations maintain that the traditional systems of leadership that are recognised in South Africa should be accorded due respect.
In their statement, they also noted that any kind of “kingship” arrangement outside recognized structures could be viewed as an intrusion and potentially destabilizing to the region.
They further pointed out that using names like Igwe or Eze when organizing a festival of this nature outside Nigeria could be considered illegitimate since there are well-defined cultural boundaries around these names.
Legal and Immigration Issues Identified
Apart from cultural concerns, other issues raised included questions on the legality and immigration status of the people behind the organization of the event.
The coalition demanded full disclosure and assurances that all legal requirements had been fulfilled, especially in working with the South African Department of Home Affairs.
Violent Protests Break Out
Tensions have risen to the level where demonstrations in East London have become violent, leading to the destruction of property. The peaceful demonstration turned into a confrontation and raised many safety concerns for the public.
These protests occurred due to the news of the crowning of Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as “Igwe Ndigbo,” which is facing stiff opposition by the local political factions and traditional rulers.
Advisory Issued by Nigeria
The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, following the escalation in the matter, advised its nationals to be careful and keep away from areas where there was unrest.
This advisory came after a circular advising Nigerians to “lie low” amid developments.
Demands for Accountabilities and Dialogue
Despite the aggressive tone in the memorandum, the coalition noted that the demands for accountability and social cohesion were made for the purpose of preventing any escalation.
The coalition called upon all parties involved to provide details of the incident and ensure that the foreigners adhere to the laws and culture of South Africa.
Failure to do so would result in civic action.
Conclusion
The dispute concerning the alleged crowning ceremony has highlighted existing differences between the parties in question. The upcoming days will reveal the ability of the parties to resolve this conflict peacefully since they will be under growing public and diplomatic pressure.
