Few African-born footballers have lit up English football as quickly as this one. Saido Berahino retires at 33, closing a career that promised far more than it finally delivered. For a generation of fans, the West Brom striker remains a symbol of raw talent and hard lessons.
From Bujumbura streets to the Premier League
Born in Burundi’s then-capital Bujumbura, Berahino reportedly played street football as a child with a ball made of tied-up plastic bags. He joined West Bromwich Albion at 11 and turned professional at 18. He also scored 11 goals in 12 matches for England’s under-21s before choosing to represent Burundi.
His breakthrough came in the 2014/15 season, when he scored 20 goals and attracted interest from Tottenham. That former Premier League striker’s rise was one of the most exciting stories in English football at the time.
The move to Stoke City and a long search for form
A public dispute over a failed Tottenham move ended his West Brom days. In January 2017 he joined Stoke City for a reported £12 million. Goals dried up, and Stoke released him in 2019.
What followed was a well-travelled journey: Zulte Waregem and Charleroi in Belgium, Sheffield Wednesday, AEL Limassol in Cyprus, Rajasthan United in India and Slovenian side Tabor Sezana. He once admitted that he has career regrets and would listen more to the people around him.
A lesson for young African talent
His story matters well beyond one man. Africa produces gifted players every year, and many leave home early to chase a dream. Berahino’s honesty about the lack of a strong support system is a warning to academies and families alike. Talent opens the door, but guidance, patience and good advisers keep a player in the room.
The football news of his retirement closes the playing chapter, but he can still help shape the next one. Young Burundians and Africans across the diaspora could learn a lot from him.
