Women of Somali were called upon by UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed to completely participate in politics and to ensure peaceful elections in their country. She voiced her concerns and empathized with women of Somali for their equal participation in political life and the support of the international community for peaceful, thoughtful and credible elections.

She highlighted that the parliamentary elections should be used as an opportunity to further increase women’s political participation. It has to full women’s inclusion in all sectors of society to yearn towards greater resilience, peace, and stability. Although, the UN and few other international partners from the Somalia government are seen to be involved in efforts that further boost women’s presence in gathering polls.

During the meeting, it was also demanded that a minimum of 30 per cent of the political quota should be reserved for women leaders to safeguard their space in the elections and policymaking. Amina Mohammed mentioned that Somalia achieved a milestone at its last elections in 2016/17 with 24 per cent of parliamentary seats filled by women, and she is hopeful that the country will build on this by expanding women’s participation even further.

In other meetings conducted by Mohammed, she discussed at length women leaders and advocates from a range of areas, including electoral management bodies, goodwill ambassadors, champions and civil society leaders. At the same time, she acknowledged and appreciated the efforts by these women who strived to bring about greater involvement of women in the country’s political space as well as in economic life.
