Dean Elgar – a South African cricketer who plays Tests and ODIs, and former Test captain – will retire from international cricket after playing the two-match Test series against India.
Cricket South Africa (CSA), the governing body for both professional and amateur cricket in South Africa, said on Friday that former South Africa captain Dean Elgar would retire from international cricket.
Dean Elgar is set to retire from his international career following the Test series against India at home. He is set to play 86 Test matches after featuring in both games against India at home.
Dean Elgar, a left-handed opening batter and a slow-left arm bowler, said, “It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have.”
Dean Elgar was born on 11 June 1987 in Welkom, a city in South Africa. He made his ODI debut against England in 2012. He made his test debut against Australia on 30 November 2012. In 2013, he scored his maiden test century against New Zealand. In 2014, he made 103 against Sri Lanka.
In 2016, he scored 127 runs during his first Test against Australia at Perth. In 2017, the South African star became the first South African opener to face 200 or more balls in both innings of a Test match.
He captained the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006. In his career, he accumulated 5146 runs. He is South Africa’s eighth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket.
In 2021, he was appointed as South Africa’s Test captain. He took over the role from Quinton de Kock.
Dean Elgar is set to retire from international cricket. He said in a statement, “Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. Indian home series will be my last, as I have made the decision to retire from our beautiful game.”
Earlier this year, Temba Bavuma, a South African international cricketer, took over the reins for the Test matches.
