South Sudan Attack Kills 2 UN Peacekeepers

An attack on a patrol of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), which was headed to Pajut in Jonglei State, has taken the lives of UN peacekeepers and resulted in seven injuries caused by armed men, whose identities remain unknown, ambushing the patrol on August 24, 2026. The UN has criticized this attack and sent a Quick Reaction Force to the area right away.

The attack comes as a result of the fears of increasing political violence in South Sudan, thus raising the question about the safety of UN peacekeepers and the peace process in South Sudan itself.

Who Carried Out the Attack on the South Sudan UN Peacekeepers?

No group has taken responsibility for the attack, and the perpetrators are unknown.

In a statement released in Juba, UNMISS indicated that their peacekeeping patrol came under attack from unidentified gunmen when moving to Pajut in Jonglei State. The area has been faced with violence among the various armed factions and communities, making it a difficult security environment in South Sudan.

The UN has not assigned any specific group to have carried out Monday’s attack. It would be the responsibility of the investigation that is to follow after UNMISS and South Sudanese authorities’ request.

How Many Died and Wounded in the Attack?

Two UN peacekeepers were reported killed in the ambush attack. Seven more were reported wounded, including three other peacekeepers, two from the South Sudan National Police Service, and two civilians.

The two peacekeepers who were killed in the ambush attack were from Ethiopia.

Anita Kiki Gbeho, special representative of UNMISS, expressed her sympathy to the families of the victims, describing the attack on the personnel who worked to maintain the peace process in South Sudan as unacceptable.

Why Is Jonglei State So Dangerous?
