Tanzania and China agree on more than a dozen deals to foster stronger trade ties

Tanzania and China signed 15 agreements to foster bilateral trade relations between the two countries. The agreements were signed as part of the agendas during the three-day visit of the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, to China.

The State House spokesperson Zuhura Yunus noted that the deal primarily focused on avocado transportation, expansion of Zanzibar international airport, and financial assistance worth 100 million yuan (Sh31.85 billion). The two countries also signed agreements in the agricultural and transportation sectors.

China also agreed to provide a loan worth $56.72 million (Sh 130.45 billion) for the expansion of the Zanzibar International Airport. The President of China, Xi Jinping, invited Samia Suluhu Hassan to China.

Samia Suluhu Hassan also met with the Prime Minister of China, Li Keqiang and the country’s Speaker of the Parliament, Li Zhan. The country’s speaker preceded the meeting between President Xi Xinping and President Hassan. The leaders called for further expansion of bilateral relations between the two countries.

The two presidents witnessed the signing of all 15 agreements. They also said that their collaboration would see to the creation of infrastructures in Tanzania. Tanzania’s Ambassador to China, Mbelwa Kairuki, noted that the two countries have a long-standing history of doing business.

According to Mbelwa Kairuki, China is a leading source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Tanzania, accounting for 1,098 investment projects by October 2022 worth $9.6 billion. China and Tanzania have witnessed deepening political mutual trust in recent years. 

President Hassan was the first African head of state China received after the 20th National Congress of the CPC.
