The UN, African Union, and Arab League step up efforts to bring about peace in Sudan

On Tuesday, discussions took place at the offices of the Arab League in Cairo between the organization’s chief and a representative of Sudanese military leader General Abdel Fattah Burhan. After the meeting, Dafa’alla Al-Haj Ali gave a speech in which he stated that the crisis in his homeland was an “internal matter” and warned against any interference from outside parties.
“I am talking to you now, and there are contacts regarding the completion of this truce, but we want this truce to be with the participation of the political institutions to which we belong, the first of which is the Arab League and also the African Union, but that it takes place with their approval and in all its details, and we do not accept anything imposed on us by whichever direction,” said Dafa’alla Al-Haj Ali, special envoy of General Abdel-Fattah Burhan.

The African Union, the United Nations, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) made an announcement on Tuesday regarding a new coordinated effort to de-escalate the current war in Sudan. During a news briefing held at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, the African Union Commission’s Chairperson and spokesperson, Mohamed El Hacen Lebatt, announced that the Union had “agreed on the necessity to intensify, collectively and individually, all our efforts to reach, as soon as possible, a complete and conditional, efficient, and inclusive ceasefire all over Sudan.”
“We have come to the conclusion that it is absolutely necessary for all of us to step up our efforts, both jointly and singly, in order to achieve, as quickly as is humanly feasible, a ceasefire that is comprehensive, conditional, effective, and inclusive across the entirety of Sudan. “They (AU, IGAD, Ed.) agreed to intensify, by all means, the effort to bring as soon as possible humanitarian support for the population inside Sudanese cities and all of the borders of all neighboring countries where thousands of Sudanese have fled,” said Mohamed El Hacen Lebatt, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Sudan Process Spokesperson. “They” refers to the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
The violent fighting in the center of Khartoum has forced thousands of civilians to flee for the country’s frontiers. At the land border into Egypt at Ashkit, some people have been waiting outside in the open air for days at a time.
Since the conflict started, at least 447 civilians have died and more than 2,255 have sustained injuries, according to data released on Monday by the Doctors’ Syndicate, which keeps track of civilian casualties.
