De Kock appointed as skipper of Durban Super Giants for SA20

For the inaugural SA20 league, Quinton de Kock, a South African wicketkeeper-batsman, will lead the Durban Super Giants. The 29-year-old De Kock is a notable player for South Africa. His aggression at the top of the order makes him a sought-after asset in T20 cricket. De Kock has led the national squad while compiling 8497 runs at an average of 33 and a strike rate of 138.

In four Tests, eight One-Day Internationals, and eleven Twenty20 Internationals, he has led the Proteas. The Lucknow Super Giants, an IPL club owned by the same firm as this Durban team, also has De Kock on their roster. In December 2021, De Kock declared his departure from Test cricket.

De Kock had an outstanding 2022 IPL season, scoring 508 runs at a strike rate of nearly 150, and a strong 2023 CPL season, scoring 221 runs at a strike rate of almost 130. But he did poorly in the Hundred in England, and his most recent task—covering the men’s T20 World Cup—did not turn out as expected. After losing to the Netherlands in the group stage, South Africa was ejected from the competition.

De Kock will have time to prepare for his SA20 campaign while the Test players get ready for their visit of Australia in December. He will be supported in leading the team forward in Durban by Keshav Maharaj, Jason Holder, and head coach Lance Klusener. On January 11, they face off against the Johannesburg Super Kings, who are de Kock’s alma mater.
