United Arab Emirates (UAE) has marked a significant milestone in its humanitarian efforts, having reached a total of AED 360 billion (USD 98 billion) in foreign aid since its establishment in 1971.
Humanitarian aid and philanthropy have always been a priority for the UAE. By celebrating the 53rd anniversary of Eid Al Etihad, the country reaffirmed its values of generosity and cooperation. The recent initiatives of the President, His Majesty Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, illustrate this mission, notably the launch of the Erth Zayed Philanthropies with a budget of AED 20 billion, aimed at having a profound impact on communities around the world.
In Africa
In Africa, the UAE has focused its humanitarian efforts in a number of countries, including :
- Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya: The UAE has set up food aid and healthcare programmes, partnering with local organisations to maximise the impact of its aid. These initiatives aim to improve food security and provide essential medical care.
- Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritania: The UAE supports education and health projects, helping to improve infrastructure and access to basic services for disadvantaged populations.
- Nigeria and South Africa: By providing targeted humanitarian aid, the UAE is working to reduce poverty and promote economic development, while working closely with local partners.
- Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Burkina Faso: In these countries, the UAE focuses on food security and support for education, working with local NGOs to ensure effective aid distribution.

Africa is not the only region in which the UAE is active. Their humanitarian presence extends to other crisis-hit regions, such as Lebanon and Sudan. It recently pledged USD 100 million to help Lebanon cope with its current challenges by sending medical supplies and emergency aid. In addition, a commitment of USD 50 million has been pledged to support development initiatives in member countries of the Islamic Development Bank.
