Keshav Maharaj became the first South African spinner to take 200 wickets in Test cricket. The milestone occurred in the first Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club when the 35 year old bowler obtained the wicket of Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine stumped by Kyle Verreynne during the 34th over.
Since his introduction to a fast bowler dominated South African team in 2016, Maharaj has shown his worth in the white shirt consistently. In his 51st Test match, he became the leading wicket taker for South Africa and the most successful spin bowler with 171 wickets surpassing the legendary Hugh Tayfield. He has now reached 200 wickets as he attempts to overtake Vernon Philander’s 224 wickets to move into the top five wicket takers in the history of cricket in South Africa.
